Our studio

We photograph memory, not just events

A photography and videography studio in Kitchener–Waterloo, working across Ontario and throughout North America.

Introduction

The name is the whole philosophy

Smritika comes from smriti — memory. We chose it because a photograph that only records what happened is not doing enough.

The frames that matter are the ones that put you back in the room: the temperature of the light, the noise of the crowd, the particular way your mother looked at you before the ceremony started. That is a much harder brief than documentation, and it is the one we work to.

Our story

Built on the weddings of our own community

We began where most studios like ours begin — photographing the weddings of people we already knew.

Word travelled the way it does in a close community: a cousin’s engagement, then a family friend’s wedding, then their sister’s baby shower two years later. A decade on, we are still photographing the same families at new stages of their lives, which is the part of the job we did not anticipate and now value most.

Working inside our own community taught us the thing that is hardest to teach a photographer from outside it: the rhythm of a South Asian celebration. When the baraat will actually arrive rather than when the schedule says. Which ritual the grandmother has been waiting all week for. When to put the camera down.

Our approach

Direct lightly. Watch closely.

Three principles that decide almost everything about how we work on the day.

Presence over performance

We give enough direction that nobody is stranded wondering what to do, and little enough that the result still looks like your family rather than a catalogue. The best frames of the day are almost always the ones nobody was posing for.

Preparation is the craft

By the time we arrive we know the timeline, the family groupings, the room, and the three moments you would be heartbroken to lose. Improvisation on the day is a symptom of not having planned, not a style.

Editing with restraint

Our colour work is warm and consistent, and it will still look right in fifteen years. We are not interested in a heavy filter that dates your wedding album to the year it was taken.
